How to Measure

Getting measurements for yourself or your child doesn’t have to be difficult!

Be sure to use a soft, flexible measuring tape for the most accurate measurements. In a pinch, it is okay to use another flexible item such as a rope and then get the measurement from a straight ruler. It’s an extra step, but not everyone has a measuring tape! Measurements are most accurate when taken over undergarments as clothing adds bulk.

Common helpful measurements to have include:

  • Chest- Measure under your child's arms, across their bust and shoulder blades while holding the measuring tape firmly. Be sure to measure the fullest part of their chest to get the correct fitting.
  • Height- Run the tape from the top of their head to the floor.
  • Hips- Measure the fullest part of your child's hips by wrapping the tape around their hip circumference. The tape should not pinch the body as you measure.
  • Waist- Measure your child's natural waistline. If they bend to the side, this is where the body naturally folds, just below the ribs.
  • Inseam- Run the tape along the inseam, from the crotch to the bottom of their leg.

Getting new measurements every 3-6 months will ensure you always get the right size.

If you have an active little one, playing games is a great distraction when you need them to be still for a moment. Pretend to be a mountain, tree, or statue. Give them some binoculars and see what they can spot in the yard. If it takes a couple of tries, that’s okay!

When measuring yourself, it may be helpful to do this in front of a mirror so you can make sure the tape is level all the way around. Be sure to ask for help if you need it!
